Success Story: Andrew Jackson Elementary School, Kingsport, TN

When Linda Carter of Andrew Jackson Elementary School describes how students have benefited from the Academy of READING software program, she talks about "self-esteem" and "self-confidence." She has seen both qualities increase among her students through a new found pride in their ability to read.

In December 1999 that Andrew Jackson Elementary School adopted the Academy of READING software program by AutoSkill International Inc. "Since that time," says educator Linda Carter, "our students have demonstrated a noticeable improvement in attention span, self-confidence, self-esteem and reading skills." Perhaps the most important of these changes has been in reading. "The students are so proud when a skill is mastered. They receive a printed certificate immediately," says Carter, adding, "one of the advantages of the Academy of READING is the fact that students are able to progress at their own rate and achieve at their own level."

In the few short months that students have worked with the Academy of READING, they have shown not only a marked improvement in reading ability and self-confidence, but also a decrease in behavioral problems – in their Academy of READING classes, and in other classes as well.

Linda Carter says, "Several of the students' homeroom teachers and teaching assistants have observed positive changes in behavior and study habits of our Academy of READING students. Because the students are so eager and enthusiastic about the program, we rarely have any behavior problems."

Carter says all the educators at Andrew Jackson Elementary School are thoroughly satisfied with what their students have accomplished through the Academy of READING software program. Carter says, "We are confident that when we receive our Terra Nova achievement-test scores, we will see a significant improvement in our Academy of READING students."
