Success Story: Cobb County Public Schools, Marietta, GA

Cobb County Public Schools use the Academy of READING software program for more than just improving students' reading skills, they use it to help decrease the rate of high school dropouts. The unique instruction methods of the Academy of READING inspire students to learn while boosting their confidence and giving them a reason to stay in school.

"We chose the Academy of READING over all the other software we examined because it offered so much more than an ability to improve reading skills," says Norma Green-Folks, Director of Education for Cobb County Public Schools. "The program's diagnostic and graphic features provide a perfect environment for teachers to monitor student progress."

Green-Folks says the board initially implemented the Academy of READING software program to help struggling readers who didn't meet the requirements for special education. Such students are often disheartened by their difficulties, making them more likely to drop out.

Cobb County's 19 middle schools and 12 high schools have computer labs with full access to the program. "From general to special education, all students who struggle with reading finally have the opportunity to excel," says Green-Folks.

She adds that, after only a short time of using the Academy of READING, high school students achieve significant improvements in their performance. Motivated by the rapid results, they become receptive to a whole range of school subjects and are much less likely to drop out.

Green-Folks notes that the school board is especially impressed by the fact that the program allows teachers to monitor student reading achievements easily and comprehensively.

"The Academy of READING software program has allowed us to enhance reading instruction without additional staff," she concludes. "And our teachers can now provide immediate feedback to students and their parents."
