AutoSkill helps Hispanic students build computational fluency in mathematics

SpanishTutor for Academy of MATH inks 42 sales within two weeks of hitting the market

Orlando, FL (Florida Educational Technology Conference, Booth 348) January 24, 2007 AutoSkill International Inc. today announced the launch of a SpanishTutor module for its award-winning Academy of MATH® intervention software. Created for struggling native Spanish-speaking English Language Learners (ELL) in elementary, middle and high school, this new offering from AutoSkill is expected to make a significant impact as the company taps an escalating market opportunity.

The U.S. Department of Education estimates more than 5.5 million students qualified as ELL during the 2004-05 school year and that native Spanish speakers account for approximately 80 percent of all ELL students. Federal funding has been provided specifically to support ELL students; i.e. proposed funding under Title III of NCLB will provide $676 million or $123 per student. AutoSkill has already experienced an upswing in sales as a result of introducing SpanishTutor for the Academy of MATH.

“Some students are behind in math, not because of poor math skills, but because they are not able to read and understand the tutorials and instruction,” said Kari Simpson-Anderson, M.Ed., director of product management at AutoSkill. “We’re providing Hispanic students with the language support they need to tackle math skills. The feedback from teachers has been overwhelming ― they love this product because it allows students to focus on the math, not the language barrier.”

The ELL market, also known as the Limited English Proficiency (LEP) or English as a Second Language (ESL) market, is expected to grow 10 percent per year for the next decade, at which time ELL students are expected to represent up to 25 percent of the total U.S. K-12 student population.

SpanishTutor for Academy of MATH allows students to achieve permanent gains in math skills with 25-30 minutes of training, 3-5 times per week. It is an optional instructional module that enables students to jump-start the development of fluency in foundation math skills by providing tutorials, assistance, and motivational elements in Spanish. The Spanish elements are offered in neutral enunciation with generic accents and the scope includes 10 skill areas that align to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards.

“SpanishTutor is an excellent complement to our research-based Academy of MATH program,” continued Simpson-Anderson. “We have an automatic intervention engine in our programs that accelerate, reinforce or remediate as required based on individual training requirements in K-12 schools. Now we’re leveling the playing field for native Hispanic students so they too can build computational fluency and become ultimately proficient in math terms, operations and word problems.”

SpanishTutor is available now for the Academy of MATH, Academy of READING and the Academy Suite. Pricing is based on single product or Suite deployment and is licensed for concurrent users. AutoSkill software is suitable for LAN and WAN deployment or can be hosted as a service by AutoSkill.
