Software for the Struggling Reader in the Middle & Secondary School

"At Dr. Knox, a middle school in the Central Okanagan School District, we have made reading a major component of our Learning Assistance program."

At Dr. Knox, a middle school in the Central Okanagan School District, we have made reading a major component of our Learning Assistance program.

The grade 7 students are taught in traditional small groups but this does not work for grades 8 and 9. We found that the older students frequently avoid the group situations, especially when they are embarrassed about the fact that they have reading problems. As an alternate approach, we have purchased several Academy of Reading programs. This enables the older, or more socially aware students, to participate in a remedial reading program, individually, on the computer where they feel more comfortable.

The Academy of Reading program directs students, in a concise way through phonemic awareness, the sub-skills of reading, and comprehension exercises. Once a student has been tested by the computer, the computer can automatically assign an appropriate curriculum of skills, can provide the teaching necessary, and finally evaluate what has been worked on. If preferred, the teacher is given the option and the flexibility to alter or assign the appropriate curriculum skills as needed.

The students experiences the success of mastering a level and moving on. I have found that once this happens they are hooked! The program boasts a 2.5 year - increase in reading skills, within 25 hours of instruction, and I have witnessed this time and again! However, the biggest gain has been actually getting ‘the buy-in' from those kids who have chronically refused help in the past. I am sold on this effective computer program to help the struggling reader in the upper grades!
